Job Description

Job Title: School Social Worker
Reports to: Coordinator of Counseling Services
Site: Central Office

Credentials: Teaching Certification or license in psychology, social work or guidance preferred.
Education: Master's from an accredited college or university, preferably in social work or other related discipline.

Training or Experience Preferred: Experience in guidance, psychology, health, and/or social work preferred.

Job Summary: The primary responsibilities of a school social worker involve helping students to address problems or issues that may get in the way of learning and competence, such as truancy, rebelliousness, social withdrawal, substance abuse, and bullying. Individuals who choose this career path play a critical role in educational settings, because they work with students to help them improve their emotional well-being and academic performance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles and behavioral management methods.
  2. Knowledge of best practices in substance abuse prevention services, behavioral health, and social work services.
  3. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  4. Knowledge of principles in psychology, social work and guidance.
  5. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding special education, students, and staff, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, IDEA, and FERPA.
  6. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  7. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  8. Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  9. Ability to develop and implement projects.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  11. Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
  12. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.
  13. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Meeting with students for crisis intervention.
  2. Developing and teaching intervention strategies to help students achieve academic goals.
  3. Helping students learn strong social skills, as well as strategies for conflict resolution and anger management.
  4. Working with family members and other individuals in a child's living situation to help support their adjustment, learning, and development.
  5. Helping parents access special educational programs and resources for students with special education needs or learning disabilities.
  6. Offering support and education for school staff to help them improve their understanding of the cultural, societal, economical, or other factors that can impact students' education and behavioral tendencies.
  7. Assisting districts in developing and implementing educational programs for exceptional or advanced students, as well as alternative programs for students who've dropped out, are delinquent, truant, or experience other issues impeding their learning.
  8. Identifying, reporting, and helping school districts to intervene when child abuse or neglect is suspected or confirmed.
  9. Interview students and parents to discuss issues related to non-attendance and develop a plan of action.
  10. Assist the school in following school board regulations for excessive absences and truancy; attend student support team meetings and court intervention.
  11. Develop and implement professional development training for educational staff and parents, as requested.
  12. Provide individual and/or group counseling in response to school-wide crises.
  13. Provide individual and/or group counseling to promote social and emotional well-being.
  14. Respond to referrals requesting verification of residence.
  15. Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refers parents and student to agencies when appropriate.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervision exercised: Does not oversee the work of other employees.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards: Only those that are part of the essential job functions or as contained within this description. Must possess a valid drivers' license and have an acceptable driving record.

Terms of Employment: Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. (182-day contract)

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Shawnee Board Policy on evaluation of personnel.
